The cathedral belongs to itself

The cathedral building belongs to a legal entity of public law, which is officially called the High Cathedral Church of Cologne. Since it does not have its own representative body, it makes use of the Cologne Cathedral chapter, which itself is a statutory body under public law. The Cathedral chapter represents the High Cathedral Church in legal correspondence and exercises a domiciliary right.

It consists of 16 canons (twelve resident and four non-resident canons). At its head, there is a cathedral provost and a cathedral dean. The cathedral provost since April 2015 has been Prelate Gerd Bachner while Msgr. Robert Small has been cathedral dean since May 2012.
