MEDICAL WELLNESS

Medical wellness for healthy people and everyone who wants to get healthy again

In the 1950s "wellness" became the watchword of a new, ambitious health movement in the USA thanks to the pioneering work of Dr. med. Halbert Dunn. His central idea was to prevent ill health from occurring in the first place by pursuing a health-conscious lifestyle and by tapping into the body's natural resources. Other American doctors took up Dr. Dunn's ideas in the 1970s and propagated the concept of wellness to advocate a healthy lifestyle and alternatives to the traditional healthcare system. The still valid correct definition of the concept as the combination of (objective) good health and (subjectively experienced) wellbeing dates from this period.

If we add the term "medical" we arrive at the substance and aims of behavioural medicine, which goes further than general strategies for a healthy lifestyle. Here medically relevant goals are achieved through a diagnostically substantiated selection of behavioural and attitude changes - in short, lifestyle changes. Experience shows that the relevant specific changes in lifestyle can only be maintained in the medium and long germ if their implementation and daily practice is associated with pleasure. For this reason the concept of wellness is entirely justified in this context.

Medical wellness programmes are thus suitable for people with risk factors or existing chronic illnesses, for whom lifestyle has a great influence on the origin and course of their ailments. This group of people includes sufferers of back pain, rheumatic illnesses, cardio-vascular disorders and their abetting factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, metabolic syndrome and nicotine addiction, and those afflicted with stress-related complaints.
