Cottbus and its history
Over 850 years old, Cottbus offers numerous cultural attractions which are absolutely worth to be visited.
The
State theatre, the City hall, the famous puppet theatre "Regenbogen"
and the various numbers of churches, museums and galleries leave
unforgettable impressions to their visitors.
The Fürst-Pückler-Museum Park, the Forst Rosengarten (unique
garden of roses) and Schloss Branitz are a must for everyone and an
attraction for experts from all over the world. The pharmacy museum and
the Wendish museum located in the heart of
the city are important research areas.
The Brandenburg Art Collections, which is a collection of many
museums from the categories of painting, graphics, photography and
sculptures, were founded in 1977 and contain 16.000 works in
permanet exhibition.
The centre of the historical old part of town is the Altmarkt with its
baroque gabled houses and the biggest church of Niederlausitz, the
"Oberkirche", the right place to start a sightseeing-tour to the
Schillerplatz and the ArtNouveau theatre.
Cottbus, the green city on the river Spree, is famous for its
parks and has recently established itself as a university town.
Nowadays Cottbus is also a centre for trade fairs and congresses.
The Spreewald
20 km from Cottbus the visitor finds a riverscape which belongs to
the most beautiful and most famous protected areas of Europe.
Hundreds of kilometres small branched arms of the river host 6000 kinds
of endangered animal and plant species.
A trip on a typical Spreewald punt through calm, scenic river landscape
should not be missed. On board lunch is served, too: the special
Spreewald cucumber with meat balls, fresh potatoe and famous native
linseed oil!
No question that there is a cucumber museum to visit in the near vicinity!
